Scholarship Information:

The 2025 JIAS Writing Fellowship focuses on the theme of Global Blackness, exploring diverse Black experiences, intellectual traditions, and theories. This fully funded fellowship invites applications from established scholars, creative practitioners, and thought leaders, particularly those from or aligned with Global South contexts. Fellows are expected to work on a defined writing or creative project, such as a book in progress or a new body of work, during the three-month residency. Projects that emphasize exploratory, interdisciplinary, or collective-based research are highly encouraged. Previous fellows include novelists, playwrights, poets, journalists, and independent researchers.

All countries, including Nigeria

Program Duration:

Three months (April 1 – June 30, 2025)

Requirements:

  • Scholars: A PhD and significant engagement in their research field, demonstrated through publications and projects.
  • Creative Practitioners: Strong portfolio of exhibitions, projects, or interdisciplinary research; a PhD is not required.
  • Preference is given to applicants from or closely aligned with Global South contexts, as well as women and gender-diverse applicants of color.

  1. CV, bio, and headshot (include links to relevant resources if applicable)
  2. Motivation letter (maximum 250 words) explaining the significance of Johannesburg and JIAS for your proposed project
  3. Detailed project outline (maximum 1,000 words) describing your writing or creative project. Include synopses, abstracts, artist’s statements, or links where relevant.
